Holiday Cocktail: Pomegranate Gin Sling

With the holidays quickly apporaching and the Christmas parties about to begin, I thought it would be good to share a few holiday cocktails.

Pomegranate Gin Sling

A classic gin sling is dressed for festive parties when made with seasonal pomegranate juice and decorated with crimson pomegranate fruit. Both simple syrup and agave syrup are widely available at liquor stores. To make your own simple syrup, boil 2 parts sugar to 1 part water, stirring just until sugar dissolves; reduce until thickened. Cool before using. Recipe courtesy of Cooking Light.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup gin

1/4 cup pomegranate juice, chilled

1 tablespoon agave syrup or simple syrup

1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

8 pomegranate seeds

2 lime slices

Preparation:

1. Combine first 4 ingredients; divide evenly between 2 chilled glasses; divide seeds between glasses. Garnish with lime slices.

These are your friends, not your little worker bees...too many demands can strain a friendship.
Be mindful of the costs of things. Remember that they are taking care of everything themselves such as their dress, shoes, hair, the bridal showers, bachelorette party & travel.
If cost is an issue, give flexibility & creativity on the attire. Pick the color of the dresses but let them pick their own style. They really appreciate this because then they can possibly wear the dress again.
Some single friends may have a harder emotional time so don't flaunt it so much!
Always get your bridesmaids a small gift to show them you appreciate the time and money they've spent. Ultimately your wedding is about sharing love. Having bridesmaids is a way to enjoy the experience with your best girlfriends.

Many people that know me know I'm always trying to do new things and think outside the box. Last year I had a vision to bring a one-of-a-kind event to the MD/DC/VA area where brides and industry professionals alike could come together and experience romance on the runway. So this past January, Style to the Aisle...a Bride's RUNWAY was launched.

Along with a fabulous team behind me, a great collaboration with some of the best designers, industry professionals and bridal boutiques....a dream transformed into reality was a hit! Old hollywood glam was definitely at the luxurious Tremont Grand in Baltimore. Of course this was something I couldn't see as a one time thing....so I am pleased to announce that Memorable Moments Event Planning Co. is bringing Style to the Aisle...a Bride's RUNWAY back for 2012! Romance will rip the runway once again with an array of gowns of all silhouettes, lengths, styles and mens formal wear. The 2nd annual bridal fashion event will take place in the spring of 2012, a date and location is yet to be announced.

We salute everything that is being done for Breast Cancer Awareness in October, but it seems another important issue is not getting as much attention that its due in the month of October...Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Did you know that:

80% of domestic shelters nationwide (more than three out of four) report an increase in women seeking assistance from abuse, and most attribute this to financial issues.
89% of domestic violence shelters expect their overall situation during the next 12 months will be worse than now due to the economy.
76% of domestic violence shelters (three out of four) indicate their funding has decreased.
65% of women in shelters can't find employment due to the economy.
56% of shelters note the abuse is more violent now before the economic downturn.

Its All About Location, Location, Location...

When looking for the perfect location for your wedding, there are 7 key factors to consider.

1. Is it big enough? Can the venue accommodate the number of guests you are expecting? Or are you going to have to squeeze everyone into this space? Don't be afraid to pick a smaller venue for fear that your guest list may grow. If your numbers go up, keep the space & ask for smaller tables.

2. Do you love the look and atmosphere? If there are too many aspects that you want to change about the venue because of the carpeting, or dated decor, then this might not be the best choice for your wedding. If you're talking yourself into a venue, it's probably not a good "fit" for your personal style.

3. Is there ample parking or transportation options? If the place is perfect otherwise, but your guests cannot easily get into your venue, this could be a huge problem! Some venues overcome their potential parking issues by having creative transportation services. Explore these options and ask questions to find out if this works for you and your guests.

4. What are the total charges you should expect? Is everything in black and white, written out on your contract in front of you? Or, do you need to read between the lines? When in doubt, ASK. I would like to know all the potential charges to expect, or even better...ask for past wedding invoices that reflect similar services that you want. They can "black out" the clients personal information and just give you the numbers. This will give you a VERY good indication of what to expect.

5. Are they giving you enough time for setup and breakdown for your wedding? If a venue only gives you 5 hours total for your wedding, that's not nearly enough time. Don't just consider the amount of time needed for your party. Also include the amount of time needed for setup (usually 2 hours or more depending on your wishes on either side of the event is needed).

6. Are you allowed to bring in your own caterer, or do they have someone in-house? Is alcohol purchased through the facility and served by their staff, or can you purchase the alcohol and have them serve this? All of these answers will determine the price tag for your wedding, PLUS you want to make sure that you love the in-house company's products and services! Know all of their policies.

7. If you are considering an outdoor ceremony or reception, does this facility offer "Plan B" options? You definitely cannot control the weather leading up to or on your wedding day, so it's imperative to have contingency plans in place. Some facilities do not offer this at all, so it's best to know now than to have a surprise the week of your wedding. Don't assume anything!

What's the 411 on Wedding Budgets - Part 1

Once you've finished basking in the glow of the engagement, you'll find it hard to get anything accomplished without a detailed wedding budget. You've watched countless episodes of My Fair Wedding with David Tutera & Platinum Weddings and bought tons of wedding magazines. However before making a single plan or purchase open your eyes & visualize what you can afford. One that will allow you to choose the most important elements you want for your big day.

It is extremely important for brides and grooms together to create a budget, the "magical number". The first thing to consider is how much money you have at your disposal. Do you have any savings for your wedding? How much of your income(s) do you and your fiance' want to invest in this wedding? Transferring a set amount into a joint account each month is a good way to start saving. Without an overall budget in place, it will be very difficult to know what you can afford for each aspect of your wedding. You'll find that deciding on the budget is the hardest job because you want to have the most memorable wedding possible.

The best way to make the best out of your wedding is to plan effectively. Know your guest count and know your budget. Enter them into a spread sheet, print them out and keep them with you. Do your research and don't be afraid to ask questions...just make sure you're asking all the right questions. Trust me. Once you can come to an agreement of the overall amount you can spend, divide that amount into parts & decide what percentage you are willing to spend. The overall budget " the magical number" must include the venue(s) for the Ceremony/Reception, Officiant, Catering, DJ/Band, Rentals, Stationery, Photography/Videography, Florals, Wedding Cake...oh don't forget about that white carpet ready gown & hubby-to-be's Tux/Suit. Oh that's not it....your accessories and if your giving gifts to your bridal party and don't forget about transportation to and from your venue(s). There's alot to factor in to that "magical number".

It's All About Men {Day 4} - Top 5 Groom's Attire Trends for 2011

1. For formal weddings, there's a real trend toward slim fit one-button midnight blue tuxedo with peak lapels. Dark blue looks richer under evening light and provides a better contrast against the black satin on the lapels. When the jacket is cut trim through the waist, the peak lapels help accentuate the shoulders for a flattering silhouette.

2. We are also seeing a strong trend toward less formal weddings. Roughly half of the wedding outfits are suits instead of tuxedos. For destination weddings and daytime summer weddings, we see a lot of cotton and linen suits. For evening weddings, it's a lot of charcoal grey and midnight blue suits.

3. We are also seeing very few tuxedo shirts with traditional pleats or a bib front. Most guys are opting for a more simple, updated style. The most popular is a classic spread collar shirt made in a rich piqué fabric that gives the shirt a more luxurious and formal appearance. The hidden button front offers a clean, formal look and eliminates the need for tuxedo studs.

4. A return to the bowtie. For the past few years, long black ties had eclipsed the traditional bowtie in popularity, but we have seen the bowtie come back strong this year. Opt for an oversized velvet bowtie to make a statement.

5. The perfect groomsman gift: matching custom shirts and ties. It gives a degree of consistency to the wedding party while still being personalized to each groomsman.

Even though its 2011, we know only a very select few grooms have actually heard of "the groom's cake" and I will say a great number of them have had the pleasure of having one. The groom's cake was created as a way of honoring the groom on the big day. While it isn't common at a more traditional wedding, the groom's cake makes an appearance every now and again.

Now what is the big deal of a groom's cake anyway? It's a cake for men, it's the groom's chance to have a cake just for him (& his groomsmen) that honors his role in the wedding - as most wedding cakes are chosen by the bride. Groom's cakes often reflects the groom's hobbies or interest and is often a gift from the bride to the groom. Their flavors are often simple & bold: (often chocolate or liquor-soaked). The cake can be served during the rehearsal dinner or at the wedding reception, along with the traditional wedding cake. His and Hers. It can also be boxed up and served as favors. In honor of Father's Day on Sunday, we will focus on men this week. We always hear about the Bride being a bridezilla, but have you noticed that your Groom is turning into a groomzilla. C. Got into a fight. You really wanted to go to Europe, and he really wanted the Caribbean. Neither one of you was willing to budge.

9. When you go to pick out invitations, your groom...

A. Didn't go. You picked them out with your maid of honor.

B. Came along but admits he didn’t really care about the difference between eggshell and ecru papers.

Groomzilla? That's not even part of his vocabulary. He's the type of guy that if you said "ecru," he'd think you were sneezing. There's nothing wrong with a laid-back groom, but it also wouldn't hurt for him to help out once in a while. Planning a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people and chances are, once he gets involved, he'll find there's a lot more to it than just flowers and dresses. What's more, planning together can help you each discover more about your personal likes and dislikes. Tell your guy it would mean so much to you if he came along, just one time, and tried to keep an open mind. You might be surprised at what happens next.

Mostly Bs: The Involved Groom

Looks like you’ve got yourself a real catch. This is the type of guy who's happy to help out, but admits that he doesn't know much when it comes to planning a wedding. Encourage him throughout the process and admit that you'll both be learning together. Try to keep each other in check by leaving some tasks entirely to him (like picking his suit and the groomsmens' suits), while you do other ones together (like picking out the music). The balance means you'll be less stressed throughout the process and he'll keep from becoming the dreaded groomzilla.

All right, you have the real deal on your hands. It is probably time you have a heart-to-heart with him before you get to the altar. Tell your beau you don’t appreciate how demanding he is when it comes to the wedding. Remind him of all the qualities you do like (and how you'd like to see more of them), and remind him that you're in this together. There's often a debate over whether or not a couple should see each other before their wedding, so we reached out to one of our wedding photographers, Liz from Elizabeth Ryan Photography. We wanted to get the opinion of a wedding photographer to find out what they experience with couples on the matter and this is what she had to say...

"Seeing your husband or your wife for the first time on the day of your wedding is something you dream of. Childhood Treats at Your Wedding

Bring something a little different to your upcoming wedding menu with some gourmet treats that will have your guests reminence back to their childhood. Remember mom used to say "don't play with your food", we've all heard it growing up as a child. Several American chefs have decided to ignore the age-old adage, re-creating childhood favorites with playful yet adult angle. Brides will love to take a page from their book of borrowing a soul-warming classic and reinventing it to add a bit of nostalgia and creativity to your wedding cuisine.

Adult Style

“Our entire food philosophy is ‘playful American,’” offers chef Jeremy Barlow. At his Nashville restaurant Tayst (taystrestaurant.com), Barlow whips up an array of familiar childhood favorites with an adult sense of flavor. One winner that would work well at a wedding is his Duck Confit Sloppy Joes.

“We serve them on mini brioche buns with tomato sauce and a side of tater tots made from risotto,” he says. “But for a wedding you could use all sorts of fillings and fun twists on fries or tater tots. I think weddings are so built on memories—whether you are recalling them or creating them—and having small bite-sized portions of things that help you recall childhood, well, kicks your event up a notch.”

Simple Goodness

Celebrity chef Rick Moonen also sees this trend in comfort foods we loved as children being brought back coast-to-coast. “I’ve worked in fine dining my whole career, but I’ve never grown up,” Moonen laughs. “I think my advice is, ‘don’t.’ Weddings can be elegant, sure. But if it were my own, I’d fire up the grill outside and offer delicious, inventive yet simple food.”

Moonen competed on the TV show Top Chef Masters and owns the infamous Las Vegas restaurant rm Seafood (rmseafood.com), where guests can try his Shrimp Moon Doggies. They’re made with sustainable shrimp and fish, and standard ketchup and mustard are substituted for Asian slaw, mint pesto and toga chips with dressings made from chipotle, ginger or horseradish.

“Wedding food can be really stuffy, and I think brides should work with their culinary team to bring lightheartedness and inspiration, not staid, typical things no one will recall years later,” he continues.

Playful Twists

When Mercury Amodio got married, she had a chicken liver station for guests. But she loves the idea of a dessert station with peanut butter and jelly mini sandwiches. This past August she opened the popular Wayne, PA, spot PBandU (pbandu.com). “It’s easy to make the most iconic childhood sandwich playful yet mature,” she says. “I would definitely say it only fits with the more casual affair, though. It’s going to be a bit messy, and you have to just let go of that.” She adds toppings like apple slices, bacon, pickles and sharp cheddar to a home-processed gourmet peanut butter base.

For a dessert bar, try mini marshmallows roasted over a tableside flame, topped with chocolate morsels or coconut shavings. If colder desserts fit your craving, ask if your chef can get them super-chilled. The chefs at FLIP Burger Boutique in Atlanta, GA, and Birmingham, AL, (flipburgerboutique.com) offer liquid nitrogen milkshakes in flavors like burnt marshmallow nutella and orange creamsicle, alongside the very-adult “Offaltine,” which calls for fois gras and chocolate.

Cocktail Treats

When thinking whimsically, don’t forget your bar—it’s a great place to poke a bit of fun at childhood treats. We love the idea of tequila snow cones. Your bar chef or caterer might have to do a few trial runs, but try mixing a silver tequila with a flavorful syrup and lightly layering over packed ice. La Biblioteca deserves the credit for these in New York City (richardsandoval.com/labiblioteca). And there’s nothing like a thick, rich, frozen milkshake. Try making them a little more adult by adding a bit of premium bourbon to your vanilla version or peaty scotch to your chocolate variety, and serving in a silver julep cup with a beautiful sprig of mint.

Its Time For Prom 2011

I wanted to focus on a different topic today....prom. Its that time of year when parents go nuts trying to get their kids all dolled up for prom, but you have to admit its exciting. Its kinda like your very own celebrity getting ready to walk the red carpet for their big night. We gather at our loved ones homes, the parents bring out the finger foods and then as they come down the stairs its lights, camera, action! Everyone is outside with their cameras, neighbors come outside for the big reveal as the limo or car pulls up to take the kids to the prom. I found some gorgeous gowns that made ME reflect back to my high school days and reminisce to prom. All these gowns are designs by Tony Bowls.

We're always talking about things that appeal to the bride, today we're switching it up and focusing on the groom. The wedding is a really big deal for both man and woman. Today we're giving you some helpful tips for the groom so you don’t face the wedding pressure and to make your wedding go smooth.

The most important thing for you is to understand your fiancée, as she's thought about this dream wedding since she was little girl. Every girl dreams about their wedding and playing “dress up” bride when they were little. Now as you can understand that you are the man of that dream. You will also notice lots of changes in her. She will be pumped up and worried about lots of things such as, how would she look, will the guests have good time, would anyone like her idea and things like that.

You’re Options
As it is you’re wedding too, you should have some opinions and options. You can give some ideas about flowers, food, photos and things like that. You don’t have to be expert at china patterns and flowers for this but it is wise to share your ideas. It will also make your fiancée think that she is not alone doing everything and you also care about the wedding.

Brides always talks about the wedding
As I stated earlier, a women has always dreamed about her wedding since she was a little girl. So, your fiancée will be talking about the wedding all the time. Listen to her, help her out. Throw some of your ideas too and if you don’t understand what she's talking about, then ask her to explain. She would be happy to do that. Let her know that you are also excited about the wedding too.

Give her timeout
If she is doing all the major work and planning for the wedding, then give her a break. Too much pressure may cause her illness. You definately don’t want to see her looking sickish while she is walking down the aisle. Cook her dinner, do the dishes, rent her favorite movie. Do anything to please her and give her a good time.

The questions

Okay, now your fiancée may come up to you and ask you questions like “what wedding theme would you like?”, “what colors should the flowers be?”, “what type of music should be played during dinner?” and things like that. Don’t be afraid of these kinds of questions and don’t feel bad if you don’t know the answer. Ask her and she will be happy to explain it to you.

Take some responsibility
You will find that your fiancée is working really hard and making plans about the wedding. And your mom will probably call her every hour and talk about the wedding too. Try to fit in the conversation and planning with mom and fiancée. Tell your mom that, it’s your wedding too and you do want to make some suggestions.

Parents
Believe it or not but both your parents and your fiancée’s parents can be a disaster at the wedding. But there is no denying that these guys raised and cared for you. But the wedding is completely yours and you don’t want it messed up. You can take some of there ideas if you like. Pick your arguments very carefully and make sure your arguments don’t collide with others.

Get some re-enforcement
Weddings is a kind of arrangement where you will discover your finances will hit the wall. Planning the wedding is really hard and you and your bride will both face the problem with time and money. The best suggestion is to hire a consultant who will plan every little detail that you and your bride both probably missed.

The best thing is to have fun and make sure things goes well. Stick to the plan and give the bride support, things should go well.

Anybody that knows me, knows that I have a HUGE sweet-tooth. So deciding to add a dessert bar service was a no-brainer. It wasn't anything to think about, but I do check out other pics for inspirtation for my weddings and special events to ensure the sweet station will be a huge hit. When I came across these pics from scissors.paper.cake, I immediately wanted to grab some sweets. This birthday party is tooo adorable, I would love to put my stamp on an event like this.

Rock Candy Cosmo

Ingredients:

1 oz. vodka

1/2 oz. triple sec

1/2 oz. lime juice

1/2 oz. Cranberry juice

Garnish with pink rock candy on a stick

Pink sugar rim (optional)

Directions:

1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice to the shaker and shake vigorously.

We Love Baby Showers!

Besides weddings we love styling showers and parties, so when I came across this beautioful baby shower picture I was too excited. The color palette is so fun and really puts some pizazz in the traditional colors for baby showers. The color palette for the party was inspired by the Tiny Prints invitation. A tent covered the beautiful table setting, and was decorated with paper lanters and a special “Baby Mama” banner. They made sugar scrub jars for the party favors and it doubled as the placecard. My favorite decorative element is definitely the huge Z they covered in artificial flowers…the baby-to-be’s name is Zoe. Baby Zoe’s room is to be decorated with bla-bla dolls so they made tags on the back of all of the chairs with cut outs of different bla-bla dolls. And here is a darling activity: while the guest of honor, opened gifts, they had baskets of ribbons, glue and buttons for the guests to make baby Zoe hair clips! Too cute, right?

5 Tips on Save The Date Etiquette

Today we will be giving you the 411 on Save the Dates. We get alot of brides who inquire about if you still need to send out your invitations 6-8 weeks prior and what do you include on them. Well here are the top 5 tips:

1. Save the dates can come in the form of a postcard or an invitation-sized announcement. Save the dates simply lets guests know that you have set a wedding date well in advance so that they can....well, save the date. For destination events, we recommend mailing them out about 10-12 months in advance if possible. For in-town events, 6-8 months should suffice.

2. Many clients make their save the dates super fun and different from their more formal invitation. It's a time when you can have fun with it. Use a silly engagement shot and ham it up.

3. If you have a wedding website, it is acceptable to put your link on the save the date. This should be how your guests are privvy to lodging information and other wedding details and updates that you will not include on your invitation or insert (like registry information).

4. You do not need to address Save the Dates formally and send one to each and every invited guest. You can keep these simple. There's no need to formally address and mail one to each invited guest. Rather, mail one to each household or family as opposed to each member of the Smith family who might be invited but not live at home.

5. If a guest indicates they can't attend after receiving their save the date, you should still send them an invitation. Since the Save the Date is not a formal invitation, you will need to send a formal invitation to each and every guest whom you'd like to attend {even if they have casually mentioned they might not be able to make it}.

After years of planning weddings and events, I have learned that nothing can make or break an event like lighting – yet many don’t give it a second thought. In my opinion, illumination is the single most transformative element in any space, and professional planners often encourage clients to set aside part of their budget for a lighting package. These days there are so many options, from the most basic to the most extravagant. We try to stress to our brides that you don’t need a big budget to create a fabulous wedding - and lighting is a perfect example of how that idea comes into play.

On a limited budget, you might use string lights or simple pinspots (small bright spotlights directed on the tables to highlight centerpieces). Paper lanterns and candles are also quite romantic and inexpensive. While they sound simple, in the hands of a talented designer these small elements can pack a lot of pow. Brides can opt for a more exciting installation of colored washes or break-up patterns —stationary lights that are fitted with a gobo, a disk cut with a specific pattern that becomes the projection. This kind of lighting is set in an elevated position on freestanding trusses or metal columns that are provided and installed by the lighting company. Some venues have rigging points, allowing lighting vendors to hang lights without a truss.

While gorgeous, break-up projections don’t necessarily break the bank. If a couple wants to save money, a break-up over reception tables or a lounge or cocktail area will be less expensive than pinspotting each table because it involves many fewer fixtures. Less fixtures = less labor = less money.

At the end of the day, wedding lighting can truly set the entire tone of the event, and it should not be disregarded. As with any vendor, professional planners often stick with lighting designers that understand their vision and requirements, and brides can benefit greatly from that relationship. If you go it alone, take the lighting as seriously as you do your invitations, cake, attire, catering, and so forth. You will not regret it!

The Wedding Industry now has its very own charity, Wish Upon A Wedding, which grants wedding wishes all across America. As the World’s first nonprofit wedding wish granting organization, Wish Upon a Wedding provides weddings at destinations across the United States for individuals facing life-threatening illness. It is a chance for couples to enjoy a very special day, without any thoughts of existing health issues, while surrounded by their closest family and friends.

By celebrating the courage & spirit of these couples, they help create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come. It is their hope that others facing similar situations will find hope, strength, and the promise of eternal love.

Officially launched in January of 2010, Wish Upon a Wedding currently has 15 chapters to serve Wish Applicants. They service couples residing in or wishing to get married within 300 miles of any one of their chapter locations. Now on to the great news, Wish Upon A Wedding now has a chapter right in Washington, DC. The DC Chapter will represent DC, MD and VA.
